Private investigator cost in South Africa — a man and woman arguing about money and trust

How Much Does a Private Investigator Cost in South Africa?

No sales pitch and no “it depends” for six paragraphs. Here are the actual bands we quote in, what moves a private investigator cost up or down, and how to spend less without getting less.

The short answer R2,500+ for a background check. R5,000–R50,000+ for surveillance.

Most people reading this are here about a partner. Our cheating spouse investigators usually land that case between R5,000 and R15,000+ for two to three days of work. Anything cheaper than about R2,500 for real fieldwork should worry you rather than please you.

These are the ranges we actually quote in, scaled against each other so you can see where your case sits. Nobody pays the bottom of every band and nobody pays the top of all of them — where you land depends on the hours involved, which is the next section.

Work it out

Roughly what your case will cost

Pick the one closest to your situation. It gives you a private investigator cost to budget against, not a quote — the real figure comes after a free conversation. Leave it alone and you will see all four bands.

R5,000 – R15,000+

Two to three days of discreet observation, which is what it usually takes to establish a routine rather than catch a single evening. Longer or more complicated cases run higher, and we will say so upfront.

R6,000 – R25,000+

Tracing a person covers everything from a debtor who changed their number to a family member nobody has heard from in years. The gap between those two is the gap in the price.

R2,500 – R6,500+

A background check before you employ somebody, go into business with them, or let them into your home. Desk work, so it is the most affordable thing we do and usually the best value.

R25,000 – R100,000+

Internal theft, a staff member running something on your time, supplier collusion, or due diligence before you sign. Priced on scope, and worth far less than what it typically uncovers.

Nothing here is submitted anywhere — it is a guide that works entirely in your browser.

Where the money goes

What you are actually paying for

Almost all of it is people's time. A private investigator cost is not driven by equipment or by anything clever — it is driven by how many trained hours your case needs, and four things decide that.

Hours in the field

The single biggest factor by a distance. One evening is not two days, and two days is not a fortnight. Everything else is rounding by comparison.

How predictable the subject is

Somebody with a fixed routine and one address is straightforward. Somebody with two addresses, irregular hours and a habit of doubling back costs more because it takes longer.

Distance and timing

Work inside a metro where we already have a team carries no travel loading. Rural work, overnight work and weekend work all do, because people have to be paid for it.

How much you already know

A vehicle registration, a workplace, a photograph, a street name — every one of those is an hour we do not have to spend finding it out. This is the lever you control.

Hourly or flat

Private investigator cost per hour, or a flat fee?

There are two ways a private investigator cost gets structured in South Africa, and the one you are offered tells you something about the firm. Hourly, at R300 to R800+ an hour, suits a narrow task with a clear finish line. One evening of observation at a known address. A single record check. You know roughly how long it will take, so an hourly figure is honest.

Flat rate suits everything else, and it is what we quote on most cases. You get a figure before the work starts, it covers the reporting, and it does not move if a subject turns out to be harder to follow than expected. The risk sits with us, which is where it belongs.

The practical rule: anything over a day should be flat. An open hourly meter on a multi-day case is how people end up with an invoice they did not expect, and it is the most common complaint we hear about other firms.

Spend less

Four ways to get an affordable private investigator

An affordable private investigator cost is mostly about what you bring to the first call. We would rather tell you this than quietly bill the extra hours.

  • Bring everything you already have to the first call. A registration number, a workplace, a photograph, the name of a street. Every detail is an hour we do not spend establishing it, and that hour is billable.
  • Do not wait. Trails cool. A case started this month is almost always cheaper than the same case started in three, because there is more left to find.
  • Use the local team. We have agents in six centres, so there is no reason to pay travel for a Johannesburg case or fly anyone to Cape Town.
  • Be specific about what you actually need to know. “Is my partner seeing somebody” is a cheaper brief than “tell me everything about my partner.” Narrow questions get answered faster.
Before you pay anybody

What should make you walk away

A low private investigator cost is not automatically a bargain. This market has good operators and bad ones, and the bad ones are cheaper for a reason. Four things should end the conversation:

  • A promised outcome. Nobody can tell you what they will find before they have looked. A firm that guarantees a result is selling you a feeling, not an investigation.
  • An offer to get into a phone, or to pull records they have no right to. That is a criminal offence in South Africa under the interception of communications Act. It puts you at risk, not only them, and it can destroy the very thing you were trying to establish.
  • No figure in writing before the work starts. If they will not commit to a number, they are leaving room to decide later.
  • Check the firm is actually registered. You can look any security service provider up on the regulator's site before you pay a deposit. It takes a minute.
  • A rate far below everything on this page. Real fieldwork has a floor, because people have to be paid. Well under it means either nobody is going out, or somebody unqualified is.

TLD works under PSIRA registration and stays within the law on every case. We will tell you plainly when something you have asked for is not something we are able to do. T's and C's apply.

Local, and what it saves you

Why a local team costs you less

A firm that ranks nationally and deploys from wherever bills you for the flight, the night in a hotel and the hours spent learning your roads. A team already working your city does not. That is the single easiest way to bring a private investigator cost down, and it is why every centre below has its own agents.

If what you are weighing up is who covers your area rather than what it costs, we have written that one separately: private detective near me sets out the six questions worth asking before you pay anybody, and how to check a firm is registered.

And when the search turns into cheap private investigator — which it often does, because this is money nobody budgeted for — the honest answer is that there is a floor. Affordable means the right number of hours at a fair rate. Cheap usually means one unregistered person with a phone camera, and it costs more in the end than it saves.

Every centre below has its own agents, and that is a large part of why our private investigator cost sits where it does. It matters to your invoice — a firm flying somebody in bills you for the flight, the hotel and the hours they spend learning the roads.

Common questions

Private investigator cost — your questions answered

How do I find a private investigator near me?

Search your own city rather than the country — a firm with agents already in your area does not put travel on your invoice. Check they are PSIRA registered before you pay anything, and ask whether the person who answers the phone is the person who will do the work. We run teams in six centres, so a private investigator near you is usually a local one.

What does a private detective cost, as opposed to a private investigator?

A private detective cost is worked out exactly the way everything else on this page is: hours in the field, distance, and how complicated the case turns out to be. Both terms are used in South Africa and we answer to both, so every band above applies either way.

What is the daily rate for a private investigator?

Most field days land between R2,500 and R5,000+ depending on how many agents the job needs and how far they travel. For anything beyond one or two days we quote a flat figure instead, because a daily rate running open-ended is how people end up with a bill they did not expect. T's and C's apply.

Can a private investigator get phone records, WhatsApp messages or bank statements?

No, and anyone who says otherwise is offering to commit a crime on your behalf. Intercepting somebody's communications is an offence in South Africa, and records held by a bank or a network are not ours to request. What we do is lawful, and it is the reason the work holds up afterwards. T's and C's apply.

How do I check a private investigator is actually registered?

Look them up on the regulator's site before you pay a deposit. A registered firm will give you its details without hesitating. One that changes the subject has told you what you need to know. T's and C's apply.

Is there such a thing as a cheap private investigator?

There are cheaper and more expensive firms, and there is also a floor below which nobody is actually going out and doing the work. Affordable means the right number of hours at a fair rate. Cheap usually means one unregistered person with a phone camera, and that costs more in the end than it saves.

How much is a private investigator in South Africa?

Between R2,500+ for a background check and R50,000+ for a long surveillance case, with most domestic matters landing between R5,000 and R15,000+. The figure moves on hours in the field more than anything else, which is why we quote after a conversation rather than off a list.

What is the private investigator cost per hour?

R300 to R800+ an hour. That band covers the city, the time of day and how many agents the job needs. It only makes sense for a short, well-defined task — for anything over a day a flat fee costs you less and removes the risk of an open meter. T's and C's apply.

What is the average hourly rate for a private investigator in South Africa?

A private investigator cost quoted hourly runs between R300 and R800+, depending on the city, the hours of the day the work falls in, and how many agents the job needs. Hourly only makes sense for a narrow, well-defined task. For anything longer than a day, a flat rate costs you less and removes the risk of an open meter. T's and C's apply.

Can I hire a private investigator for just one day?

Yes. A single day answers a narrow question — whether somebody was where they said they would be on a particular evening, for instance. It will not establish a pattern. If you need to know what somebody does routinely rather than once, budget for two or three. T's and C's apply.

Why is there such a wide range on the cheating partner price?

Because the cases are not alike. Two evenings in one suburb with a known address and a known vehicle is a small job. Somebody with an unpredictable schedule, two addresses and a habit of checking their mirrors is a much bigger one. We quote after the consultation, when we know which of those we are looking at.

What is the difference in cost between a background check and surveillance?

The private investigator cost for a background check sits between R2,500 and R6,500+, because it is desk work on records. Surveillance puts people in the field for hours or days and starts around R5,000+. The gap is not margin — it is the number of paid hours involved.

Do you charge for the first conversation?

No. The consultation is free, confidential and carries no obligation. You will get an honest view of what your case needs and what it would cost before you commit to anything.

Is everything I tell you confidential?

Yes. We work under a non-disclosure agreement from the first call, and your name and circumstances stay inside the team working your case. T's and C's apply.

Can you investigate somebody without them finding out?

Discretion is the whole discipline — an investigation that gets noticed has already failed at its first job, so we work in a way that keeps it that way. What we will not do is discuss our methods on a public page, and you should be wary of any firm that does. T's and C's apply.

What should make me walk away from a private investigator?

Anyone who promises a specific result before they have heard the case. Anyone who offers to get into a phone or pull records they have no right to — that is a criminal offence in South Africa and it puts you at risk, not just them. And anyone who will not put the price in writing before starting. T's and C's apply.

Can I pay in stages?

For longer cases, yes. We agree the scope and the figure upfront and split it where that makes the work possible. What we will not do is start an open-ended job and invoice as we go.

How quickly can you start?

Usually within a few days of agreeing the brief, and sooner where the matter is urgent. At the consultation we will give you an honest view of the timing for your case rather than a number we cannot stand behind.
